In the late twentieth century, the local economy experienced yet another shift, with the focus moving from agriculture and industry toward retail and service businesses -- including healthcare, finance, and insurance, serving the growing but still total populations of the surrounding counties. Tourism continues to develop as a major focus of the economy, as the residents re-discover their heritage and history through new eyes.

The Air Force is the largest employer or cause of employment in the region, with more than 25,500 people on the Department of Defense payroll in Bibb and adjoining counties. Combined, the Warner Air Force Logistical Center and Robins Air Force Base make up the largest industrial complex in the state of Georgia.

Among private employers, GEICO, a direct service insurance company which first came to Macon in 1974, now employs more than 3000 people in the area. All told, nearly 10,000 people work in insurance or finance in Bibb County.

The Coliseum Health Care System employs more than seventeen hundred people in its four area facilities. The Medical Center of Georgia, founded in 1895, is now one of four Level One trauma centers in Georgia and is ranked as one of the 100 top-performing hospitals in the United States.

YKK Corporation of America provides more than a thousand jobs in the region and the interesting distinction of making Macon the zipper manufacturing capital of the world. More than seven million YKK zippers are produced in their Macon facility each day.
