Dining

The great dining experiences available in Macon range from the simple but satisfying to elegant “New South” re-thinking of traditional regional dishes or creative uses of the abundant and varied fresh local foodstuffs.

Barbecue at Satterfield’s on New Street is a decidedly casual introduction to regional fare. They serve homemade desserts, southern style vegetables and an array of hickory smoked meats, prepared daily on the premises.

At the Back Burner Restaurant on Ingleside Avenue, Chef Christian Losito is known for his osso bucco Milanese, and does remarkable things with venison and local, farm-raised rabbit.

The Grits Café serves Southern food with a thoughtful modern flair. The menu changes, but a sampling of offerings includes Fried Green Tomato Napoleon, pork chops with smoky field mushrooms, and macadamia crusted grouper. As the name would suggest, grits figure prominently as finely flavored accompaniments to many entrees.
